Damned Squirrels!

Most of my events are on Saturdays, usually requiring an early start.      For all intents and purposes, all purchasing happens over the course of several days, but never on the day of the job.     As an example, Thursday might be the purchasing of all Non-Perishables such as Soda, Paper goods, Plasticware, Chips, Condiments.       And Friday would be the pickup of Perishables, such as Meat, Produce, and breads.  Friday Night would be final packout, to include icing up coolers.

To this date, I operate out of my home, which is on 1/5 acre.     The trailer used for the weekend job is situated along the side of my house, with the ramp gate dropping into my backyard.      The trailer is completely out of sight, unless I go out of my way, to go to the backyard.

Well one particular job, I was packed to the hilt with food.     Usually I can fit the majority of the food into the truck, keeping the trailer open for hardware.   But this job required I stash stuff into every possible nook and cranny.      So light stuff went onto the upper layer of the trailer.   Chips, breads, snacks...

As night fell, I got absorbed into all other issues and coordination.   I had completely forgotten that I left the gate open.

The next morning at 5:30am, I went out to do a final check on the trailer.  To my Horror, I had found bread packages had been dragged out of the trailer, and decimated by the squirrels (and likely other critters).   Torn packages, and bread crumbs all over the place.  My guess was that easily 40% of the bread was destroyed.    I almost shit myself right there.     No time to Make a Costco Run.     No other resources to break away from the production to replace the bread...   I was totally screwed..

Fortunately, at the time, I was amateur enough to be  a fairly poor estimator of what people would consume.  I often overpurchased.     So we didn't run out of rolls.  Close, but we managed.

Now, whenever I put rolls in the trailer, I'm super secure.
